Live Plants
Appearance: Aquarium live plants come in a variety of shapes, sizes, colors, and textures. Some have broad leaves, while others have fine, feathery foliage. They can range from vibrant greens to reddish hues, adding a dynamic visual element to the aquarium.
Types: There are several types of aquarium live plants, including foreground plants, mid-ground plants, and background plants. Foreground plants are typically smaller and are placed at the front of the aquarium. Mid-ground plants are of medium size and are positioned in the middle areas of the tank. Background plants are often taller and are placed at the back of the aquarium to create depth.
Benefits:
Aesthetic Enhancement: Live plants add a natural and visually pleasing element to the aquarium. They create a more realistic underwater landscape, resembling the plants found in lakes, rivers, and oceans.
Water Quality: Live plants help improve water quality by absorbing nitrates, ammonia, and other pollutants from the water. This contributes to a healthier and more stable aquatic environment, promoting the well-being of fish and other inhabitants.
Oxygen Production: Through the process of photosynthesis, live plants release oxygen into the water. This is especially important during the daytime when fish and other organisms require higher oxygen levels.
Habitat and Shelter: Live plants provide hiding places and shelter for aquarium inhabitants, reducing stress for fish and other animals. They create secure spaces for fry (baby fish) and smaller organisms to seek refuge.
Algae Control: By competing with algae for nutrients and light, live plants help to control excessive algae growth in the aquarium. They can help maintain a balanced ecosystem.
Behavioral Stimulation: Live plants encourage natural behaviors in fish, such as exploring, grazing, and breeding. Some fish species use plants for building nests or laying eggs.
Maintenance: Keeping live plants in an aquarium requires some maintenance. Regular trimming and pruning help to prevent overgrowth and maintain the desired appearance. Adequate lighting and proper nutrient supplementation (through fertilizers) are crucial for the health and growth of the plants.
Planting: Live plants can be planted directly in the substrate (gravel or sand) of the aquarium. Some may also be attached to rocks or driftwood. It's important to consider the specific care requirements of each plant species when arranging them in the tank.

Anubias Barteri Round AKA Anubias Golden Coin is a less common type of Anubias that's fast becoming popular in the hobby. This is an extremely easy plant to grow and can survive a wide range of water parameters. It has long stems like Anubias Barteri but the leaves are more round and circular. This plant is suitable as a midground and background of your aquascape.
Like other Anubias plants it can grow in both aquariums and terrariums either submerged or emersed. The plant can be attached directly onto driftwood, rocks or any aquarium decoration using thread or glue. Make sure to keep the rhizomes above your substrate or the plant can begin to rot. Propagation is easy and straightforward; simply cut or pull apart rhizomes to be replanted.
Anubias Congensis is fast becoming a favorite among planted tank enthusiasts. This is an extremely easy plant to grow and can survive a wide range of water parameters. The leaves are slender and sharp unlike the round leaves of Anubias Barteri or Anubias Nana. Like other Anubias plants it can grow in both aquariums and terrariums either submerged or emersed.
Anubias Congensis is native to the tropical regions of Africa where it can be found growing along streams, rivers and marshes. Its a flowering plant that grows best when the rhizome is attached to a hard surface such as wood or stones. They have low to medium light requirements and can benefit from regular fertilization. CO2 is not necessary but can promote faster growth and more robust leaves. Since its a slow grower, the leaves are susceptible to algae growth if placed under high lighting.
Propagation is easy and straightforward; simply cut or pull apart rhizomes to be replanted.
Amazon sword plants are very common in the aquarium hobby, being that they are beautiful and easy to care for. They offer excellent and attractive coverage to the background of an aquascape. These plants have short stems that grow in a rosette, bearing long and ovoid leaves with a pointed tip. Their leaves are dark or bright green in color with prominent veins and slightly wavy shape.
Amazon sword plants can get pretty huge, making them a great fit for a large tank. Their large leaves can easily restrict light to other plants if they are not pruned regularly. These plants propagate through side shoots off of their leaves, which can be trimmed and replanted into the substrate. To control the size of your Amazon sword plant you can remove the side shoots and older leaves.
With a nutrient rich substrate these plants will tolerate most lighting conditions, but moderate to high lighting is ideal. CO2 injection is not necessary but will help the plant grow faster if desired. Amazon sword plants will grow submersed or emersed. Emersed plants produce lovely white flowers.
Anubias Barteri striped is a popular aquatic plant, frequently used in all types of aquariums. Like other Anubias it can grow in both aquariums and terrariums either submerged or emersed. It has slightly longer stems compared to Anubias Nana but the shape and characteristics are similar. This plant is suitable as a midground and background as the leaves can grow up to 3” long.
Like other Anubias, this variant is a flowering plant that grows best when the rhizome is attached to a hard surface such as wood or stones. They have low to medium light requirements and can benefit from regular fertilization. CO2 is not necessary but can promote faster growth and more robust leaves. Since its a slow grower, the leaves are susceptible to algae growth if placed under high lighting.

Najas is one of the easiest aquarium plants to grow. It can be left floating or grown like a stem plant by burying the stems into your substrate. It can survive in a wide range of conditions and does not require any special attention, making it perfect for beginners who are trying out live plants for the first time.
Najas is a favorite among breeders who are looking to provide their fry with ample hiding places. This plant can be left floating in the water column and will grow to cover the entire tank within weeks.
